Love the Body You’re In! has been taught to teenagers and charitable organisations, and I’ve been a guest speaker at various functions including the British Psychological Society’s (BPS) annual conference.

I’m the world’s first advanced practitioner in Functional Imagery Training for weight loss (the latest evidence-based research on how to use imagery for weight loss). I am one of Ireland’s only eating psychology coaches certified by the Institute for the Psychology of Eating and I also hold master practitioner status from The National Centre of Eating Disorders and Obesity.  My interest in fitness has seen me qualify as a Dru Yoga instructor and British Athletics coach in running fitness. I co- founded a successful running club in 2015 to help people go from Couch to 5K to beyond. There is much more to changing your relationship with food, eating, your body and weight than counting calories in, calories out, counting fat, points or syns. Dieting creates a chemical reaction in your body that makes you end up fatter. It may give you short-term weight loss but in the long term it will be regained.

 

  • Dieting teaches the body to endure starvation by dropping the metabolic rate, which only recovers slowly to its original levels.
  • On a diet, muscle as well as fat is lost. The more you diet the greater the proportion of muscle you lose. Since only fat is regained, the body becomes gradually flabbier.
  • The first 3-5 kgs of weight lost on a diet are sugars from the blood, liver and muscles, plus water, which will always be regained.
  • Dieting teaches the body to protect itself from future famines by setting up the weight control thermostat in the brain, which is why dieters often end up fatter after each diet.
  • Crash dieting and frequent detoxing can lead to loss of The body produces cortisol, which is associated with weight regain, especially on the stomach.

 

If dieting worked, it would have worked long ago. We would have one diet and that would be the end of it. Instead we spend our time trying to follow the same diet repeatedly or diet after diet.

The reason why we gain weight is not just about food. Many different factors that fall into the following categories cause you to have a negative relationship with food, eating and your body and can lead to weight gain.

 

PHYSICAL – Chronic dieting, nutritional deprivation, dehydration, stress, sleep deprivation, hormone imbalance and poor digestion.

MIND – All-or-nothing thinking, starting again on Monday or ‘I’ve blown my diet now, so I might as well eat everything’.

EMOTIONS – Avoiding feelings and eating instead, past emotional issues.

ESTEEM – Feeling negative about the body you have and the person you are in the world.
